Why Don’t “Your People” Step Up?

Yes, this was actually said to me- out loud.

The question, "Why don't your people step up?" hung heavy in the air. It wasn't just the sting of the words from a former boss; it was the stark realization of the systemic barriers that hold so many back, particularly women and women of color.

Growing up Latina in a traditional Hispanic household, strong opinions from a woman were often seen as "bossy." I followed the expected path, marrying young and building a family. But when my world shifted with divorce, I had a profound awakening. I had to rediscover who I was, what mattered to me, and how I would create a secure future for my children.

This became the catalyst for my personal and professional transformation. Entering the workforce, I felt a mix of determination and insecurity. My first female leader, while initially inspiring, embodied a cold, ruthless leadership style. It solidified my vision for a different kind of leader – one who empowers and uplifts.

Later, I encountered a different kind of female leader. She saw my potential and nurtured my growth. Yet, her question, "Why don't 'your' people step up?" echoed in my mind. It ignited a fire within me to understand the cultural, social, and economic factors that hinder the advancement of women, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Today, I am a first-generation Latina college graduate with a B.S. in Legal Studies, an M.S. in Organizational Development and Leadership, and pursuing a M.A.A with a concentration in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. This journey isn't just about degrees; it's about equipping myself to be a champion for change.

In the past ten years, I've been promoted twice, built a business, mentored countless individuals, created and executed women and Latina leadership developement initiatives. I've facilitated workshops, spoken publicly, chaired committees, interviewed on podcasts, moderated panel discussions, co-founded Lean In Latina- San Antonio circle, and raised two incredible daughters – all while embracing lifelong learning.
